How do you install carpet tiles?

As a rule, a carpet tile is a square tile of 50 x 50 cm. Depending on the starting point of our designers, these tiles can be designed to encourage the smoothest possible design or to play with the 'tile shape'.

In the past, with carpet tiles, the approach was often to give the carpet user the impression that instead of carpet tiles, wall-to-wall carpet was installed. Carpet tiles, when properly installed, also give the impression of having no direction (monolithic). However, over time the method of installation has changed and the carpet tile is now often installed in a way that the tile is clearly recognizable in the design and clearly indicates direction. Over the years we at Tarkett have learned to play with it and we now recommend many different installation methods for different looks. The recommended form of installation is indicated by the arrows on the back of the carpet tile. An explanation:

Installing Carpet Tiles Monolithic

DESSO Essence Carpet Tile Installation Monolithic

Monolithic is actually the most well-known and 'natural' way of installing carpet tiles. The tiles are not staggered, they all face the same direction and are therefore installed exactly next to each other. With 'uni' carpet tiles a simple and good way to achieve an even installation.

Install Carpet Tiles Brick

Brick is the brick or stretcher bond. Similar to the stretcher bond in bricklaying, but with one essential difference. As a rule, a brick is elongated in nature, and a carpet tile is square. That is why we are talking about a horizontal stretcher bond here. The carpet tiles all point in one direction and the installation is staggered on the resulting horizontal line. This installation provides nuance to an installation and can still give carpet tiles with stripes or an expressive design some peace or uniformity.

Install Carpet Tiles Ashlar

One installation method known for carpet tiles and commonly used with PVC strips is Ashlar. However, there is an important difference. A wood decor of PVC strips has no direction. The goal is to install there as different or randomly as possible. With the direction of carpet tiles, a stretcher bond can also be made in the vertical sense. Ashlar is thus essentially a vertical stretcher bond.

Install Carpet Tiles Checkerboard

DESSO Lita Carpet Tile Installation Checkerboard

A checker or chessboard installation. This installation method does not use offset, only the direction. By turning each subsequent carpet tile a quarter turn, the installation looks like a checkerboard. Without using colour or offset, an expressive whole can be created with a 'uni' carpet tile.

Carpet Tiles Random Install

When carpet tiles have a somewhat more 'full' decor and a single tile contains a lot of design, it often lends itself to a random installation. The main aim of this installation method is to install as randomly as possible. Without offset and without regard for direction. Since this installation method does not take into account the direction, it is often the fastest and cheapest installation method.

How can you install carpet planks?

Because carpet planks are narrower and longer than carpet tiles, carpet planks offer an extra dimension by allowing even more installation methods. With a carpet plank, use can be made of direction, length and shape. In addition, carpet tiles and planks can also be combined together.

Installation Carpet planks Ashlar – One Way

Ashlar with shelves is the most common method of installation. We are familiar with wood, laminate and PVC strips. However, the direction of carpet planks brings an extra dimension to Ashlar. You have to play with the direction. We start with Ashlar One Way. The stretcher is installed vertically with the direction of the carpet plank to the same side. This is particularly expressive if the carpet plank has a decor, high-low motif or varying design.

Ashlar Multi Way is then of course playing alternately with the direction, in Ashlar installation. With carpet planks with a diagonal motif or where it is a more uniform design, the installation method can create an even more striking floor.

Installation Carpet planks Brick

Similar to the stretcher bond on the horizontal axis with carpet tiles, it is also possible to apply a Brick installation with carpet planks. Due to the long planks, the effect will have an even greater impact and will also be much more visible, compared to the installation method with carpet tiles. Brick provides a monotonous plank installation.

Of course there is also the possibility to play with direction here. All planks in the same direction, alternate rows in the same direction, or individual planks alternate. Brick therefore offers various options with planks. Brick gives a space a lot of length due to its uniformity.

Installation Carpet planks Block pattern

One option that can only be used as an installation method for carpet planks is the block pattern. The block pattern is an installation method where shelves are installed in groups of four side by side in the same direction. The connecting block again has four planks in the same carpet direction, but then the planks themselves are turned a quarter turn. This way, blocks of 100 x 100 cm are created with a unique appearance.

Installation Combination Carpet Planks and Carpet Tiles

Because Tarkett has coordinated its carpet tiles (50 x 50) and carpet planks (100 x 25) in terms of dimensions, it is also possible to combine them. This creates a unique pattern that will always impress. By coordinating colours, shapes and designs, a real statement is created on the floor.

Installation Combination Carpet Planks and Carpet Tiles

Carpet tiles and carpet planks thus offer a very wide range of installation options. Each with its own impact on the appearance. Specific explanations about the installation method, preparation and tools can be found in our installation manual which can be found on the product pages.
