DESSO carpet
DESSO has been one of Tarkett's brands since 2014
DESSO can look back on ninety years with excellent results. DESSO's vision was to be the world's market leader in environmentally friendly flooring products that offer added value in design and functionality, thereby contributing to people's health and well-being. During that time, DESSO has built up a reputation as a leading producer of high-quality and innovative carpet tiles, wall-to-wall carpet and artificial grass pitches. And Tarkett has not missed that. Committed to sustainable development, Tarkett has also implemented an eco-innovation strategy and promotes the circular economy. It was therefore a logical step for Tarkett, the world market leader in floors and sports floors, to announce on 30 October 2014 that it would fully acquire DESSO.
But what does this takeover mean? And how do we look back on DESSO's milestones? Check it out in this article.

History
A look back: DESSO through the years
Over the past 90 years, DESSO has introduced a number of patented products, such as DESSO AirMaster® . This carpet provides eight times lower fine dust concentration in the air compared to hard floors. Another important innovation is DESSO EcoBase®, a unique carpet backing that has earned DESSO a Cradle to Cradle® gold certificate. As part of Tarkett, the DESSO carpet continues to focus on sustainability and contributing to people's health and well-being.
DESSO carpet exists 90 years
We have been offering various DESSO carpet applications for 90 years, with a suitable offer for every room.
93% is eco certified
No less than 93% of our commercial project carpets are Cradle to Cradle Bronze or Silver certified.
100% recyclable
We are the only manufacturer in Europe with a dedicated carpet recycling centre, able to recycle 100% of the materials used in PA6 carpet tile yarn.
A look back at some of DESSO's impressive milestones:
- In 1930 DESSO was founded in Oss as a producer of woven carpets for homes and businesses. The synthetic turf division was launched in 1980. In 2015, Tarkett completes the acquisition of DESSO.
- Air quality in buildings is often far below par. DESSO launched a special carpet called AirMaster® in 2010, which provides more fresh air. In 2015, DESSO AirMaster® celebrated its fifth anniversary by achieving GUI Gold Plus certification.
- In 2010, the silver Cradle to Cradle® certificate was obtained for DESSO EcoBase®, a new backing for carpet tiles. 93% of the DESSO range of commercial carpet tiles is now Cradle to Cradle® certified and in 2015 the DESSO carpet was also the first carpet in the world to achieve a gold C2C certificate.
- In 2011, DESSO® launched 60% of its carpet tile range with Econyl® yarn made from 100% recycled material. In 2014, DESSO also developed a new material flow for the carpet backing: 20 million kilos of lime waste from drinking water production.
- 2019 - With ReStart® we want to collect cutting waste and post-user floor coverings from, among others, DESSO carpet and then recycle and reuse it as a new raw material in our carpet. Recycling carpet tiles with EcoBase backings and ECONYL® yarn provides up to 84 percent2 more CO2 savings compared to incineration.
Our approach
Innovation and creativity strategy accelerated by acquisition
Designing products to be good for the environment
Sustainable entrepreneurship has many facets for us. This concerns our responsibility towards people, the environment and profitability. Inspired by the Cradle to Cradle ® philosophy and the pursuit of a circular economy , the former top management at DESSO set the company on its current path in 2008, so that by 2020 products will be made according to the Cradle to Cradle® principles. As part of Tarkett, this course will be continued.
Contribute to an even healthier living and working environment
We know that people spend most of their time indoors, 90% of their time. Indoors, they consume things they cannot see, such as particulate matter or volatile organic compounds from paint, plastic and the like. This leads us to the next question: how do we create an even healthier indoor air quality with DESSO carpet? We have already made good progress with our AirMaster carpet and we continue to innovate all our products.
Design has an important effect on mental health
We are convinced that design has an important effect on people's mental health and therefore also influences their physical health. Based on this vision, we make carpets with the right colour, structure and design to create exactly the atmosphere our customers want, from inspiring to soothing. In order to further realize our ambition, we regularly conduct research into the influence of the interior on the end users of a space.
